The Most Outstanding of them all
It is with colossal satisfaction and pride that I have the pleasure to announce that the Noble Contrada of Bruco (Caterpillar) won the 16th of August 2008 Palio in the Piazza del Campo in Siena. The third victory this century, the 4th in the last 12 years. Not bad for a Contrada (neighbourhood) that last century remained without a victory for 41 endless years and won 1 Palio in 75. The wind of fate has decided to change direction and is blowing decisively in our favour now. From being mocked as the eternal losers, we now rightly march with our heads high through the city streets in Siena. We can feel the looks of envy and jealousy of the inhabitants of the other 16 Contradas glued upon us as we proudly show off the Palio banner conquered and deservedly won with merit last Sunday in an epic race.
Beneath the heraldic coat of arms of my Contrada an ancient insignia reveals “Come Rivoluzion Son il Mio Nom” that signifies “Like a Revolution My Name Sounds” and beyond doubt Bruco revolutionized the subtle intriguing and complicated equilibriums of what is probably the last true medieval tournament remained in the world. Yes, because Bruco triumphed in what was probably the most astonishing and surprising unforeseen victory of the last decades and thus even more satisfying than ever for the entire populace of Via del Comune (our district main street) bearing in mind also that we weren’t expecting to take part in this Palio.
In fact as we had raced both July and August 2007 we had a 30% chance of participating in each race this year and that only if we got the random lottery pick. In the July event we were very fortunate and we did get picked but the surprises weren’t over for me.
Days later I was approached by the Vicar that communicated that I had been chosen to represent the Contrada together with another twelve in the historical parade that precedes the race. I couldn’t find adequate words. I was literally flattered. Regrettably though fate this time turned its back to me as I injured my foot and despite all my efforts and determination the pain was too strong and in tears I was forced to renounce. I was aware when I pronounced my decision that it would have been unlikely to be given a second chance.
However we did get assigned a decent horse and hired the jockey Tittia who won his first Palio in July 2007 on Goose to ride him. Porcupine obtained the best horse and hired the pluri-victorious legendary jockey Trecciolino; it was apparent that Porcupine sought after this Palio desperately and invested a great sum to make sure they would win it. The race was set, Porcupine dashed in the lead, the other Contradas remained behind and Trecciolino won his eleventh Palio completely undisturbed dominating the entire three laps.
On the 6th of July all of Siena gathered once more in the square to follow the picking of the three additional fortunate Contradas that would join Eagle, Panther, Goose, Tower, Forest, Sea-Shell and Turtle for the August event. At 7.00pm the sound of the clarions echoed throughout the square announcing the pick. The populace of Bruco went wild when the window on the town hall opened and saw that the first flag that was hung up on the pinnacle was ours followed by Ram and Dragon. Fate decided we take part once again and the amazing coincidence was that Caterpillar, Ram and Dragon had also been extracted in August 2007 and what’s more in the exact same order! We couldn’t believe how blessed we were as we going to participate in our 5th consecutive Palio. As we marched back to our headquarters overjoyed with delight someone pointed out that in this Palio there would have been 4 Contradas bearing green in their flag; Goose., Forest, Caterpillar and Dragon and in Siena we believe that when this occurs disaster is bound to happen.
On the 9th of August the Palio banner was presented in the town hall, Mario Ceroli the designated artist crafted a gorgeous painting that when uncovered was greeted by a standing ovation. On the 12th of August the day preceding the horse assignment during the dinner in our splendid gardens the Vicar approached me and communicated that the committee had decided to give me a second opportunity, my foot had recovered and so I accepted without any hesitation.
13th August was the day we went to get our horse, the ten captains of the participating Contradas decided to select an experienced lotto of horses with only 3 debs. Yet again, in a sizzling hot and packed square, the mayor randomly pulled out one by one the name of each horse and randomly assigned them to each participating Contrada.
Selva got Giordhan and left the square in silence as did Eagle and Sea-Shell that obtained the debs Ilon and Guess. Turtle was assigned Elimia and were extremely satisfied by the pick. We attained Elisir that had raced before but anonymously and our expressions on our faces were grim as we left the square with our horse. One of the two big names, Fedora Saura that won July 2007 went to the Dragons that roared with delight while the victorious horse of July 2008, Gia del Menhir, went to Tower. They departed the square in silence and tears in respect of a twenty year old member that days before was involved in a dramatic car accident and was in coma (was this due to the 4 greens?). Choci that won in 2006 was obtained by Ram to the joy of their members, Elfo a decent Palio horse to Goose and finally the last deb, Istriceddu, to Panther that according to experts had great credentials.
At this point the captains needed to sign up the jockeys according to the characteristics and qualifications of the horses
Eagle hired Paride De Mauro aka Tiburzi , Turtle got hold of Luigi Bruschelli aka Trecciolino (the legend with 11 victories in 33 Palios raced) and became automatic favourites together with Dragon with Jonathan Bartoletti aka Scompiglio. Tower chose Andrea Mari aka Brio. Nicchio hired Alberto Ricceri known as Salasso. Panther Walter Pusceddu nick-named Bighino, Selva Antonio Villella aka Sgaibarre, Goose Giovanni Atzeni aka Tittia, Ram Luca Minisini aka Dè. Our Capitano Gianni Falciani contacted Giuseppe Zedde, a jockey he had discovered years ago and that had raced his first ever Palio for Bruco in 2002. Gianni himself had conferred upon him the name Gingillo (literally trinket). He had since raced other 7 times for other Contradas with no victories; never leaving any positive impressions. We had no hopes, an anonymous horse a quack rider and further more with 2 recent victories no need to waste money. It was clear to everyone that this Palio was going to be conquered by some more “famished” Contrada.
All the same the atmosphere in our headquarters was exciting, we spent the rest of the 13th making puns on our jockey and we accompanied the horse back to the square singing our hymns out loud. During the trial the Ram horse collapsed, fortunately without consequences and dinner that night turned into a memorable banquet.
14th of August during the morning trial this time the Eagle fell without damages and in the evening the third trial was won by Turtle. In Contrada we continued to sing and drink wine making toasts to Gingillo, Elisir and the Nobile Bruco.
15th of August we laid the tables for over 2000 people and it started to drizzle then it rained, then it poured, the evening trial was cancelled and so inevitably was the banquet. The track turned into a mud pitch, the risk of the Palio being delayed became a serious possibility. The curse of the 4 greens again struck the city and to make things even worse news spread that a young member died tragically in the Sea-Shell Contrada.
16th of August the sun was shining in the blue sky but the track was still too wet and so the final morning trial was also inevitably cancelled. It was the first time since World War 2 that two consecutive trials were annulled, however the track was covered with more sand and at 2.00pm the local council announced that the Palio was going to be raced. In the meantime more shocking news was announced: Selva decided at the last minute to change jockey and hired the deb Ygor Argomenni aka Smarrancio.
I had lunch in Contrada with the other companions that would represent the Bruco in the parade. I sported yellow blue and green tights tucked in brown medieval slippers, a puffy shirt under a thick green velvet coat underneath a cape and a woolly blue cap on my head. I felt sorry for my companions that were clad in cumbersome armour and carrying heavy swords, lances and flags; all I had to do was keep my hands on the belt buckle.
Our Rector and Captain gave us a short briefing after the blessing of Elisir in our chapel, they encouraged us to keep a straight face and reminded us of whom and what we represented. All of a sudden I started to panic and while climbing the steep street of my Contrada I felt the tremendous responsibility, my legs started to shake, and my mouth went dry and my hands were sweating cold. I couldn’t wait for it all to be over. We entered the main street and then paid visit to the bank headquarters where our alfieri executed the art of throwing the flag. They performed with so much dignity; it seemed to me that they were tossing together with the flags their hearts in the immaculate blue sky. We then had to march through the crowded main street up to the Duomo and then finally enter the Campo square. One of the horses of the Police force (Carabinieri) that open the parade by charging around the piazza fell and was injured delaying the entrance by half an hour (again the 4 greens?). Finally it was our turn; we entered with a slow pace following the rhythms of the bell tower. In 40 minutes it was over. We had to change into a more comfortable medieval costume in the town hall and sit on the bleachers reserved for the participants of the parade. At 7.15pm out came the horses accompanied by a deafening collective roar of the over 30,000 spectators. The jockeys and horses trotted to the start known by the Siennese as la mossa where they awaited the line up (also randomly picked).
After 50 nerve racking minutes where rivals Goose and Tower, Panther and Eagle tried to obstruct each other and following three false starts finally Dragon entered and the race commenced. The contest began and emotions ran wild as we all got caught up in the electric atmosphere lived in the three breakneck laps around the treacherous track. Dragon dashed in the lead, we had a terrible start and were way behind in eighth place. Panther crashed on the mattresses at the first turn of San Martino and at the turn of Casato Dragon fell, the Goose was now in front while Gingillo and Elisir started to catch up, they were 6th, 5th 4th then in 3rd.place. Goose seemed to worry more about enemy Tower leaving us space on his right, Gingillo took advantage of the gap and at the beginning of the third and final lap overtook him tackling the last turn of San Martino perfectly, and we were in the lead with half a lap to go! We started screaming with excitement and when Gingillo crossed the finish line after the third Casato with his arm raised in triumph we jumped into the square embracing all the members indistinctively with tears in our eyes. We proudly collected the Palio that days before I had longed to see hanging in the hall of victories of my Contrada. First, following tradition we carried it to the Duomo and then into our headquarters. My first thoughts went to all the Caterpillar members that had recently departed this world, I couldn’t hold back my grief and wept for hours not yet realizing what an amazing Palio we had won. The night was long, we drank plenty of wine, we sung and paraded back and forth to the square waving our flags and beating the drums.
Now we shall party every single night until the conclusion on the 11th of October with the big victory party in our streets and with the hero the winning horse that will get the head of the table.
What else can I say? I had somehow predicted a victory, we had won last century in 07; 12; 22; 55 and 96 the sum of 7 12 22 55 curiously add up to 96. This century we won in 03 and 05 and so it seemed obvious that 08 were supposed to be our victory year.
The Palio is the Palio, it is a fantasy where the attitudes and the resentments of a city divided into 17 districts converge, true there are futile and tenacious rancors, but also the respect of the enemy Contrada is lived with a sense of esteem and dignity in its fullness.
I wish to thank herein my Rector Fabio Pacciani, the Captain Gianni Falciani, and the whole Contrada for accepting me in their big family.
I wish also to thank Stephanie, Paul and Ashley that were with me the day we got extracted to race in August. Denise that stayed an extra day to bring luck for the horse assignment Diana, Rob, Lou, Colleen, Susan and Kip that shared the victory with me and all of you that follow the Palio from the US. I’m sure that the energy and passion you transmit must have an important role in all our recent victories. Last but by no means least I wish to express thankfulness to my Caterpillar godson Iain that I baptized as a Contrada member and who follows the Palio in Chicago with so much fervour as if he was a native born Senese.
I invite you to view the pictures of me in the attachment and the more than 1000 victory photos on the following link http://lnx.fotostudiodonati.it/index.php?gallery=43&page=5
I shall be producing a new Palio documentary focused on this legendary victory that will be available in October and that I shall be presenting in LA on the 24th October.
Grazie Mille!!

Ciao Dario, Cool Blog..Bravo Bruco..I loved the joy and elation expressed on your faces in the pictures... It's truly a unique event!! Now, do you really celebrate each night until October. Bev
Congratulations!!
We hope you stop by again when you are next in Portland, Oregon!

Ciao Rings family ! Well we have won many Palios in the last years so we don't have that desperate need to celebrate as in 1996 and 2003. This victory though was extra special because unexpected so yes at least for the first weeks we shall organize plenty pf parades and dinners. The committee has decided to set up a massive tent so non of our dinners get rained off. We had 1200 people at dinner Wednesday and Friday after the assembly we shall sit down again for another banquet. Saturday we parade in town in tuxedos and then after an aperitivo in Piazza san Francesco another dinner in Contrada and of course Sunday after the parade we have one more……and so on. Who knows what will happen in two weeks, less people will turn up for sure but something will always be going on. We will conclude on the 4th October with a massive street party (everyone’s invited) and then on the 11th the victory dinner. I hope my liver survives!
It seems that every time I take off for a book tour we win a Palio. I guess I need to write more books....Maybe a book of Caterpillar victories!
Well done, Dario. I knew this was going to be the year of the Caterpillar. Well done!!!The unexpected events in our lives sometimes prove to be the high-lights of our journey.......I called all the gals in our group who met you and dined with you last May and they all were thrilled about the outcome.
Having new knowledge of just exactly what this race involved made all of us wish we had been there to support your efforts! I hope we can actually witness this race in the near future.
If you are in Florida or want to come to our establishment to do a book review or signing, please let me know. We would be honored to have you share more of your life experiences!I wrote a blog about you June 6th-you may find it fun to review! My best to your liver and your wonderful friends in the Caterpillar Contrada! You are truly champions!
Jann Mumford
I'm thrilled for you Dario. I know you boys must've done a number on your livers with all that celebrating. ;)
Ciao Jan! Can you send me the link for your blog once again? I would love to come to Florida. We must make sure I make it next time.
Lala...I'm still on my first liver
Ciao Dario,
Great to hear that Caterpillar came through again. Wish it was covered on US TV. Thanks for the great write-up and let us know when you have some info on this year's olive oil.

Ciao Bill! I will be disturbing my mailing list very soon again as I shall be announcing the new olive oil site, new bottles with dispenser and FDA organic seal.
Ciao Dario.. 1200 people for dinner all feeling that joy and elation! Must be a blast!! Is the film you will be showing at the Italian Cultural Center in October a new DVD about the Bruco Palio victory? Or, will you be showing the one you narrated and have for sale? If it is new, will it be DVD that is more personal, a look at your own Contrada and the whole experience you went through from being chosen to represent Bruco, to drawing the horse etc. to preparation to victory and then the post celebrations. Would love to learn more.

The new DVD shall substitute the now obsolete Siena the Days of The Palio. It shall be in HD Blue ray and will have a new text and soundtrack. I will try also to get this product broadcasted on some specialized travel channel. I shall insert the Caterpillar victory simply because it was such a beautiful race.
You might like to know that the day after the victory, the video studio I collaborate with released a 20 minute DVD with only images and soundtrack based entirely on the Bruco victory. I can send it if you like but it is available only only in PAL (in the US you have (NTSC)
Obviously it is I suddenly Ican't figure out why I'm posting as anonymous.
Anyhow Sunday we won the Palio
Monday. The Tower Contrada(our big ally) invited the entire Bruco Contrada to dinner.
Tuesday dinner was cancelled due to the departure of our honorary Rector (102 years old!)
Wednesday we had a parade follwed by 1200 people at dinner and a parade after dinner. (I was in the kitchen)
Thursday We had 600 people at dinner plus pre and after dinner parade
Friday we were 400 at dinner (I was serving at the tables)pre and after dinner through the city streets parade
Today Saturday we have 1200 people at dinner plus we have been asked to dress in tuxedos as we have an elegant parade followed by a photo at Duomo and an aperitivo in Pzza San Francesco.
On Sunday we will be around 400 at dinner
What a week you have had!! This is such a unique event.. what a sense of community and pride!! Would love the 20 minute DVD, but can't view in that format. Let us know when the your new one in US format is available.
Enjoy, Enjoy, Enjoy!!

Well Dario, when your moment arrives , you must realize it's( happening! thenyou must ow what to do to propel it further < I think you do , the events since we talked in the Campo in March seem to indicate that you have the where with all to pursue you dream !! I am in awe of people who can take it to the top rung I think youre a star....... I had the chance once to become a large scale muralist in vitreous enamel and did a wall as big as any fresco in Italy when it was done and installed , there were national magazine articles and pictures but I was not courageous enough to get it to another level above ,, so I took the comfortable route and went back to teaching ( public service ) and there is at least some nobility there and I probably did make some small contribution to the young people that i was lucky enough to teach . it was a tough job in the inner city but now that Iam 66 it isall a funny memory carry on upward Dario I hope in your fame i will not lose your personal response to me, Rollin affectionately always
Dario,
I burst with excitement this morning when I read the account of the Caterpillar winning the August Palio!! It made me want to take out the Caterpillar scarf I bought at the 2007 July Palio and run down my street waving it. I am not sure my neighbors would understand, so instead tonight I will pour myself a glass of Chianti Classico Banfi from Montalcino and celebrate your amazing victory. (Yes, I have been treating myself to Chianti Classico since my visit to Italy last summer.)
I just finished reading Too Much Tuscan Wine. As with your two other books, I absolutely loved it!! I will admit that, because I am a mother of sons (smile), at times during the book I worried about the many "drink til you're drunk" episodes, but I also understood that that is what , in essence, the faux editor said she wanted. However, your colorful friends and your wonderful relationships with them I love hearing about. And...your description of the countryside makes me long for more time in Tuscany. What a genius you are!!
And...the closing of the book absolutely blew me away. Your discovery of who Mia really was was absolutely beautiful as were both your and her memories of those enchanted teen moments together. It almost makes me want to ask if Mimi /Mia and the ending were real or if you decided to mix your autobiographical information with fiction. Saying that it absolutely had no fiction in it, what a truly remarkable experience that must have been...your online experience with Mia who turned out to be Mimi.
Your capacity to experience life as you relate it in your books is truly remarkable, Dario. Thank you for sharing your wonderful human stories for others to enjoy.
I look forward to hearing about your next olive harvest and oil that can be purchased. My husband and a friend and I would like to be in Tuscany for the olive and/or grape harvest in the fall of 2009 or so. What month does that usually take place. I ask because I have had several different opinions. I realize that harvest depends on the weather, etc.
With great appreciation,
Creta Carter Nichols
Dario. . .the prayers and good energy I sent for a Caterpillar victory in July 2009 showed up a few months early!! We're thrilled for your contrade! So now when we visit next July, we'll wear the Bruco scarves that I'm saving to give my family in their Christmas stockings. We wish your entire contrade many happy days and nights of celebrating and glorifying in your wonderful, wonderful victory. Linda W. and family
Dario
I just returned from a golfing trip & was very excited to read of Bruco's awesome victory. Ronda & I will also have a celebration on 11 October. We hope to see you on your next book tour...hopefully you will be in the the San Francisco area.
John & Ronda Patella
Ciao! Glad that so many of you have been thinking positive and sending good vibes over the Atlantic. Now the news that is circulating around the tight narrow streets in Siena is that probably next year an extra Palio will be raced in honor of a 600 year anniversary of a city institution. It probably will be raced sometime in June. In that case all 10 contradas get randomly picked so chances of racing are pretty high after all. These are named Pali straordinari, the last was in 2000. Yesterday all the kids paraded around town with the Palio.
Dario, I was so happy to see your email today, that you won the Palio, it bought tears to my eyes. This was the happiest news I have seen or had myself in weeks!!!!!
Bravo....I am sure I speak for all of us who have read your books, heard you speak, or met you personally, in Cleveland, OH
What a lovely win.....
Ciao Dario! I was lucky enough to be in the Campo when the Bruco raced home to a well-deserved victory. We then promptly returned to QG to celebrate with a few fiascos of vino rosso (and of course, a pizza at the Bar)... Bravo!!!
Congratulations and enjoy the festivities :)
You mean you did not stop by and have the free wine offered in Contrada??
Many people have been asking why the members of a winning contrada go around sucking at pacifiers. The reasons are two, one because we are reborn and also because we call the Palio we just won "il cittino" the baby.
Ciao Dario, Great Blog....I could feel the excitement and to see the many smiles and joyous expressions on everyone's face was beautiful!
I will continue to keep you and the Contrada in my prayers for continued success and good health!
Please let me know when you will be in Alaska! We have a great Barnes & Noble that would love to open their hearts and doors to you. If not Alaska, please let me know when you will be visiting Seattle, WA.
Again, Congratulations and thank you for the great books, DVD's and wonderful updates of what is happening in our Beloved Italy!
Ciao,
Mary
Ciao Mari! Would love Alaska! The snag is I come in the Winter seasons and I'm not a lover of cold weather...
Yesterday we had a memorable dinner the theme was "Sorpresa!" as our victory was a Surprise!!
Ahh, yes, we should have stayed in Siena for the festivities but I was afraid of being trampled by the hordes of crazy italians, celebrating their victory! Leaving for the safety of the bar in Quercegrossa was a far better option in my opinion... it was still fun though!
Remember Chuls that you are welcome to come every night to dinner! The celebrations go on until 11th October
Congratulations on your VICTORY!!!
Ciao Dario,
I still can't believe I was a part of your winning Contrada and the Palio of a lifetime for me! When I tell my friends about my experience they just don't get it. They have no way of understanding the intense emotions, joy and tradition that surrounds the Palio. You were so gracious to include me & Kip in the Bruco Contrada. Although I was disapointed at the Contrada dinner for 2,000 being cancelled due to torential rains, it was so much fun having dinner with you,Diana and Rob in your village. What a night! I had just finished your book "Too Much Tuscan Wine" and indeed I drank too much Tuscan wine. Hanging out with you in the Osteria and Bar where many of your stories happened was a trip. And meeting a few characters in your book there brought it all to life.I will never forget that Palio and your jockey winning the race. To experience the intensity in the Campo for the agonizing 50 minutes the horses were jockying at the start, talking to the locals,I got a first hand understanding of a life that is only lived in Siena. Nowhere on earth is life the same as it is here. Thank you for letting me experience the "insiders view" of an amazing victory!!!! I am forever a Bruco!
Until next time,
Susan Condon
And the parties continue!! We had a memorable dinner last night. First we paraded around town with 120 liters of wine that we offered to whoever passed by and then we had a great dinner under the rain!
Soon it will be a month.....we will obviously throw a party for that! the Complemese
A month of celebrations!! How do you do all do it? Are you exhausted? Who prepares these magnificent dinners? Who cleans up :-)? Are all the celebrations a community effort with the entire contrada cooking and contributing? If so.. do you have a specialty you prepare? What are these huge meals like? Are thre any dishes unique to Palio celebrations? Is there a particular person who is the master of ceremonies for the night? Do you put on any skits or theatrical parodies? How do people do these celebrations nightly for a month and juggle regular life? It's like Christmas everyday!!
Beverlee
Yes, please do tell, Dario! We want to know it ALL!! How about a new book. . .Too Much. .Palio di Siena. Let's have some anecedotes, recipes, songs, pictures, human drama. And personally, I want some romance thrown in, too!! You could even market your new DVD with this yet-to-be-written, just-conceived book. And after this book is published, let's get this made into a major motion picture. Where's the screenwriter out there??!! LW
Linda W... what a great idea!! I really liked Dario's Palio video, but a fun movie with some romance thrown in, set to the background of the Palio race and celebration, sort of an, Under the Tuscan Sun with a total Siena twist, would be great!! Let's see who could play Dario? The photography would be totally gorgeous and the excitment huge.. with some romance it will be a blockbuster...The new James Bond movie is coming out soon and some of it was filmed in the Campo when we were there. Bond is running from a guy during the Palio (staged for the film).
Very Cool to watch.

So today is the Complemese!! Exactly one month ago we won and we expect at least 700 folks at dinner all sucking at pacifiers. How do we do it? This is the intriguing part of the Contrada, sociologists come from all over to study this incredible sense of community. We have no catering, we do it ourselves simply by taking turns in the kitchen serving and cleaning up. You have fun in the Contrada but you must also volunteer to work sometimes. We always have a three course meal at the cost of 10 euros per person. We don't really bother about the menu, we simply try do do something different every day. I had the pleasure last Friday to have some Texan guests and they were shocked by the cameraderie and incredible sense of community. They had a mini culture shock I'm sure.
Bad news is that I shall not be able to have the DVD done in time for the LA presentation but wil be able to show clips of this historical victory. We have a Consortium in Siena that protects the event so, yes, James Bond was filmed in Siena and you will see the 2007 July Palio but with no interaction. That would not be allowed. More pics coming soon!
Ciao Dario,
The new photos are fantastic. Way cool you are the Facce di Palio!! How was the Complemese? What a sense of community! What happens now? More celebrations?? Have you noticed any special good fortune since the Palio win? Hope so! Isn't olive harvest time soon? Are the grapevines displaying their fall colors of red and orange yet? Ahhh Tuscany... never can have too much.
Beverlee
The party continues...endless. We are preparing a grand parade on the 4th October with an open feast for however wants to take part...the theme is silk! We are Caterpillars are we not?
Ciao Dario,
Are you still on in L A on October 24th at 6pm? Didn't know if this wild economical ride caused a change in your plans. Hope not. Look forward to hearing more about your recent victory and hopefully seeing some clips or pictures.
Beverlee
Ciao Dario,
Great presentation in Los Angeles. It was fun seeing you in your traditional costume.. Especially the hat :-) You sure got some beautiful beach weather during your trip.. Did you get to jog by Venice beach? My husband daughter and I rode bikes down there on Saturday. I had forgotten what a "colorful" place it was. Kind of a 60's time warp going on.. So interesting.
It's always fun to hear about Siena and the Palio and get a, right off the tree. olive tasting... great evening. Thanks Dario!!
Hope the jet lag isn't too bad.
Best Regards,
Beverlee
I hope you got a snapshot of me wearing the hat so that I can add it to the blog!
Great seeing you at the event...I was so nervous
Ciao
Lucky for you, no snapshot :-)The image will just have to remain forever etched in our memories:-)

I find it hard to express my feelings...3 three months have gone by and yes we are still celebrating, Sunday was the three month anniversary and we threw a party with dinner, then we paraded the Palio around town and then danced until sunrise. Sunday we have a banquet that will officialy end the Palio year...phew! we had assembly yesterday to decide the new captain...obviously we all know that Gianni was reconfirmed. I really have got to get back to writing, I have started a new book and have plenty ideas, I need to lay back and return to my world of silence to be able to achieve this new effort. I can't let you down, I feel a tremendous responsability. The parties are over friends. I promise to post some new pics meaning that I have to go and pay visit to all the photoshops in Siena and leaf through the piles of pictures one by one,
Dario,
Three months of Palio partying!! What a great time. Saw Quantum of Solace. Siena and the Palio are in the first 10 minutes of the movie. Looks like they interspersed stock footage of past Palio's with the shots they filmed when we were there. Crummy, but no, they didn't use the Bruco victory, probably because it happened later in the summer But, of course the Palio looked exciting and beautiful as did Siena. It was all too quick for my taste. They should have used more footage from Siena :-). Glad to hear you are thinking of writing again. Steve and I are coming back to Tuscany next fall. Just can't stay away. Looking forward to some olive oil to tide us over!
Ciao,
Beverlee
